“We … make God our boast through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.”
Today’s scriptures employ mixed metaphors—images of sheep and shepherds, priests and people, harvest and laborers—all of which intermingle to create a web of meaning on which we have based our understanding of Christian vocations. Above all, these images help us see Christian vocations as an extension and expression of Jesus’ own ministry in the world. They lend themselves especially well to a reflection on the vocation to ordained priesthood. The scriptures for today help us understand the role of the ordained in the life of the Church. They also encourage us to pray for an increase in the number of candidates for priestly ordination, for “the harvest is abundant but the laborers are few” (Matthew 9:37).

Our relationships define who we are and who we become. In the first reading, we are told that our faithfulness to the covenantal relationship will ensure our position as God’s cherished child, the disciple of Christ who will take the good news of God’s reign to all (or almost all!). What does it mean that this Kin-dom of God is coming? It means that the sick will be healed, the dead will return to life, demons will be cast out, etc. Although Jesus names twelve men to go out into the countryside to do this work, we who are in covenant with Jesus are also commissioned to go out into the world and shout joyfully that we are God’s people, God’s flock. Our covenant with God includes a covenant with our fellow human persons.
Taking the Good News into the world is hard work, demanding and uncomfortable. We might offend someone. We might offend ourselves! Jesus has accepted this hard, demanding, and uncomfortable work, including being willing to lay down his life. Notice that when Jesus sees the crowd and is moved with pity for them, he doesn’t send them thoughts and prayers. He sends the Twelve to go and stand with those people in solidarity and do concrete work to dispel human pain.
