Our Fascinating Faith: Vocations
Jesus, the Good Shepherd, tells us that he calls his sheep by name and they respond by following him. Unlike the first disciples, we do not have the advantage of hearing the Lord Jesus call us by name. Or do we? Throughout the centuries, countless men, women, and children have responded to the Lord’s call and have dedicated their lives to serving the people of God. How many times have we heard the phrase “he or she has the calling”? We need not look beyond our own parish to find ways in which the Lord’s call is manifested. The Lord Jesus calls us constantly through the celebration of the sacramental life, the proclamation of the living word, and the example of those who have been clothed in Christ through Baptism. Today the Lord Jesus, the Good Shepherd, speaks to each one of us, the sheep of his flock. Let us hear his call to follow him as his disciples. And on this World Day of Prayer for Vocations, let us also pray for others, that they may hear and heed what God calls them to do with their lives as baptized Christians.

Reflecting on the Word
We often wonder about who Jesus really is—is he human, is he God? Is he both? How can that be? “Who are you, Lord?” We ask. The little children I serve are often drawn to biblical narratives that point to an answer to that question for them. The image of the shepherd is particularly powerful for them as relationship is one of the most important needs of children. They are deeply moved by the awareness that the Good Shepherd knows their name and calls to them. That is often the moment they fall in love with Jesus, the Good Shepherd. They wonder about the reach of the voice of the Good Shepherd, and what an “abundant” life would look like.
This particular passage in John’s Gospel is so rich and replete with imagery of love, care, super-abundance, unity, and peaceful harmony under the One who is love.
We know who Jesus is—he is the One who calls us by name, the One who protects us and cares for us, the One who guides us with his gentle voice, the One who leads us into the fullness of life, the One who lays down his life for us, the One who gathers all of humanity into his loving arms. This is the shepherd who will not let even one of his sheep be lost among the thorns and brambles of life. In today’s second reading, Peter refers to the text from Isaiah, and in so doing shines a light on the parable, revealing the lengths to which Jesus will go to save us from ourselves.
In this time of mystagogy, we explore the beauty, meaning, and significance of the sacraments. The parable of the Good Shepherd reminds us of our baptism, when we were called by name to become one of the sheep following the Good Shepherd. Peter’s letter today calls us to hear the voice of the Good Shepherd and follow him. In moments when the throbbing ache of our lives seems to overpower us, we need only remember that we are called, we are rescued, and we are loved.
